Why did you choose Ropes & Gray to start your legal career? OR Why did you apply to Ropes & Gray?

One of the key reasons I chose to train at Ropes & Gray was the opportunity to work on complex, cross-border matters with highly regarded lawyers, particularly within the private equity sector. I was also drawn to the firm’s strong focus on collaboration and training, which is especially important to me as I am in the early stages of my legal career.

How did you find the recruitment and selection process?

The recruitment process was well-structured, and the next steps were always clearly communicated. The process involves a variety of assessments, which allows you to demonstrate different skills. I really enjoyed interviews as they were relaxed and a good opportunity to discuss your interests. The graduate recruitment team were friendly and encouraging throughout.

How would you describe the firm’s culture?

Ropes & Gray has a great collaborative culture; the firm actively encourages collaboration between offices and practice groups. Everyone is approachable and supportive so you can always ask questions and learn from others.

Tell us about a memorable matter you’ve worked on.

I had the opportunity to go on secondment to a private equity client for six months. This allowed me to gain insight from the client’s perspective and see the life cycle of a deal from the other side. The experience was incredibly valuable, and I particularly enjoyed gaining deeper insight into how private equity firms balance commercial objectives with legal risks and decisions.

Tell us about a pro bono matter you’ve worked on.

I assisted on a pro bono matter for the Family Law - Legal Advice Centre. This involved conducting an interview and advising an individual regarding a Child Arrangements Order arising from divorce proceedings. This was an insightful experience, as it was challenging to work in an unfamiliar area of law and to practise skills not often used in my day-to-day role.

What tips would you give a potential applicant?

I would focus on why Ropes & Gray would be the best firm for you to start your legal career and how your values and interests align with the firm’s.
